What is Transverse Myelitis?

Every mom remembers the first time her child walks, runs, rides a bike, throws a baseball, catches a football, and the list goes on and on. Last month, I got to experience all of those firsts again, a second time. This time was sweeter though. The first time Conner learned to walk, I took for granted the fact that he would be able to. This time, I knew each step was a blessing.

If I learned only one thing from this amazing month of second firsts, it is that nothing, and I mean nothing is a small blessing. In this country, we take so much for granted. The fact that our child can speak or even move is a blessing. If our child can communicate, and feed himself, it is a huge blessing. To ride a bike is nothing short of a miracle. By the grace of God, I have seen a miracle this month.

Last night, Tom and I were explaining to our older boys just how far that God has brought Conner. In the hospital, the doctors would not promise anything. They couldn’t. There is no way to know how much one with Transverse Myelitis will recover. We showed them this video on You Tube. It is a very real reminder of how blessed Conner is that he can still walk and even run. You can watch the Transverse Myelitis Awareness video by clicking HERE.

So many of you have asked, "What is Transverse Myelitis?" I thought this video captured the definition better than I could explain it. I really hope you will take the time to watch it.

As I watched the above video, and listened to the lyrics to the song "The Voice Of Truth," by Casting Crowns, it reminded me of how many times during the last 7 weeks that Conner has insisted on watching the movie, "Facing The Giants." It's a theme song on the movie, and Conner would keep saying, "I have to watch this movie to see if I can learn some more football moves." That wouldn't seem abnormal, except it was coming from a 7 year old boy who couldn't run more than 10 steps without getting winded, and he still couldn't move his right arm.

I love in this song it says:

"But the stone was just the right size
To put the giant on the ground
And the waves they don't seem so high
From on top of them looking down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
Singing over me

I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth."

Please continue to pray with us for continued and complete restoration of health to Conner’s entire body. He has come so far. Please pray specifically for complete healing of his spinal cord, and especially strength in his right arm.

By the way, if you haven't seen the movie "Facing The Giants," you should see this video too! Just click HERE.
