Tonight, I went to hear the author and speaker Dr. Kevin Leman who wrote the book, "Have a New Kid by Friday." As I was looking up his book title, I couldn't help but notice that over 10 million people have googled his book. Does that mean that over 10 million people really want to have a new kid by Friday? I'm not sure what that says about us all. I'll have to think on that one.
As I walked in the door to hear him speak, one of my sweet friends greeted me, and said, "So, which one of your kids are you here for?" Don't you love the way God keeps us humble through parenting?
He was a great speaker, and had a lot of great common sense suggestions such as, if you child throws a temper tantrum, just step over him and keep going. Your child is just trying to get your attention. If he is disrespectful to you, ignore him, and then take away a privilege. Basically, just don't let your child dictate your behavior. Stay in control.
The funniest thing he said was, "How many of you went potty today?" Of course everyone raised their hands. Then he said, "Now, how many of you got an M&M for going potty?" So funny and so true. As parents, we tend to praise our children for things that should be expected of them.
So, I haven't read his book YET, but I can tell it is definitely worth reading. It will be next on my list.
